过而不改,是谓过矣。"Not to mend the fault one has made is to err indeed." Confucius

The title of this silk hand scroll is “The Classic of Filial Piety”.  It was painted by the Song Dynasty artist Li Gonglin around 1058.  In the tradition of wenrenhua, this painting reflects the belief that paintings should be more than just the record of an image.  They believed that a painting should reveal the values and thoughts of the artist.  To do this Song artists incorporated poetry or philosophical musings into their landscape compositions.  Just as important as the image, the calligraphic writing reinforced the message that the artist was trying to send.   The title of this piece refers to an ancient Confucian text that teaches a simple lesson: Filial piety (which means to have respect for your elders) begins at home. When a man honors and obeys his elders it ensures success in life and harmony with the world. By integrating this written moral lesson into his art, Li uses his art to teach his viewers how to live a better life.
